Richard Broome AM, president of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, presents the story of Billibellary, a Wurundjeri Elder of the 1830 and 1840s, and an influential and important ngurungaeta, or spokesman, for the Wurundjeri–willum people at the time of the first European settlement of Melbourne.

Richard Broome, taught at la Trobe University for thirty years. He has written twenty books and dozens of articles on immigration, religious history, local history, sports history, popular culture, biography and Aboriginal history. His book "Aboriginal Australians" has appeared in five editions over 39 years between 1982-2019. Focussing on cross-cultural engagement, with an emphasis on Aboriginal negotiation, agency and the capacity for Aboriginal self-empowerment, his latest book "Aboriginal Victorians: A History Since 1800" is an update of his previous works.
