Until the Red Leaves Fall follows Emmy, who has had to put aside her dreams of becoming a playwright so she can support her husband, Sebastian’s career. It’s worked – Sebastian is currently the hottest new playwright in Melbourne’s 1957 theatre season. But when theatre impresario and lead actress Virginia van Belle discovers that her favourite moments in Sebastian’s plays are scenes Emmy has written for him, Virginia wonders whether Emmy might like to write the lead play for her theatre, the Belleview. And when Virginia finds out about Emmy’s wartime history – that, as an Australian-born Japanese person, Emmy and her family were arrested by the Australian government, dispossessed, and placed into civilian internment camps during the war – Virginia insists the play be written about that.
Initially, Emmy is excited to have the opportunity to tell her family’s story but, as the work progresses, it becomes clear that her version of the story and Virginia’s version of the story are two very different things. As opening night looms and Virginia becomes more demanding, Emmy can’t help but wonder whether she’s handed her family’s story over to exactly the wrong person.
Filled with secrets, betrayals and lies, Until the Red Leaves Fall asks the question, what happens when you let the truth get in the way of a good story?
